Global O-phenylphenol (OPP) market was valued at 268.08 Million US$ in 2018 and is projected to reach 424.94 Million US$ by 2024
O-phenylphenol (OPP) is an organic compound that consists of two linked benzene rings and a phenolic hydroxyl group. It is a white or buff-colored, flaky crystalline solid with a melting point of about 57 °C. It is a biocide used as a preservative under the trade names Dowicide, Torsite, Fungal, Preventol, Nipacide and many others.
There are two methods to manufacture the O-phenylphenol, one is separation method, and the other is synthesis method.
Separation method is recovering O-phenylphenol from the distillation residue which comes from the production of phenol by sulfonation. The distillation residue which comes from the production of phenol by sulfonation contains 40% Phenyl phenol; other ingredients are phenol, inorganic salt and water. First, separate of mixed phenyl phenol distillation, than, we heat and dissolve the mixture (2- hydroxy biphenyl & 4- hydroxy biphenyl) in trichloroethylene, after cooling, separation, filtration, drying, we can get 4- hydroxy biphenyl, to wash with sodium carbonate solution, we can finally get its sodium products. We can only get very limited production by separation method.
Synthesis method is producing O-phenylphenol by chemical synthesis like cyclohexanone condensation dehydrogenation. Some common methods are 2- biphenyl oxygen, Chlorobenzene and phenol coupling method, cyclohexanone condensation dehydrogenation. The cyclohexanone condensation dehydrogenation method, first, cyclohexanone and catalyst dehydrate, then, cyclohexanone and catalyst dehydrogenate, finally, we can get O-phenylphenol. Most of the manufactures use this method to produce O-phenylphenol.
